NoteCard Manual
Sharing

NoteCard lets you share sheet files with other Macs like normal files, using multiple Macs connected on a network or by synching sheets using automated backup tools.

Sharing with DropBox.

DropBox is a free multi-platform, widely supported tool for sharing files between computers and portable devices via the internet. To learn more about DropBox visit the official web site.

  1. Download and install DropBox. A new folder named DropBox will now reside in your currently logged in user folder at ~/DropBox which is where all files will be synched from (take the DropBox tour to learn more about how it works).
  2. Open the NoteCard preferences and go to the DropBox tab (as seen in the picture below).
  3. Check the Sync using DropBox option.

After the steps above are completed you will have a new NoteCard folder inside the DropBox folder at ~/DropBox/NoteCard which will automatically synch changes to any sheet files when DropBox is running. Repeat the steps above for any Macs that have installed NoteCard and all your sheet files will be kept in synch automatically!

When sheet files are updated or moved via DropBox while two or more versions of NoteCard are open simultaneously the new sheets will be replaced in real time as you work. If the sheet being updated is currently open NoteCard will issue a notice then update the sheets cards on screen (otherwise just the image in the sheet browser will be updated).

In the instance that multiple users are using NoteCard simultaneously it's possible for data to be overwritten as the user which wrote to the sheet file last will have precedence when updating occurs. If multiple users wrote to the same sheet file simultaneously during synching DropBox will store these files (in the sheet folder) named as "conflicted" but NoteCard will always update any running versions with the most recent file.

Sharing with Macs connected on a network.

If you are using NoteCard on multiple Macs connected on a network (ethernet, wi-fi etc...) it's possible to keep sheet synched by sharing a single sheet folder across all Macs on the network. Only one Mac can be the host and all other Macs must share the sheet folder defined by the NoteCard running on the host Mac.

To share a single sheet folder for all Macs running on a network do the following steps on the host Mac:

  1. Create a sheet folder named NoteCard to be hosted for all Macs on the network. By default the sheet folder is stored at ~/Library/NoteCard which can use but you may want to choose another location for the hosted folder to preserve a local copy for the host Mac.
  2. Open the NoteCard Preferences in the NoteCard menu.
  3. Next to the Sheet Folder field press the Select button and locate the hosted NoteCard folder.

Once the host Mac is setup repeat the final step for all Macs on the network that are running NoteCard to share the sheet folder.

When sheet files are updated or moved while two or more versions of NoteCard are open simultaneously the new sheets will be replaced in real time as you work.

If multiple users wrote to the same sheet file simultaneously during synching NoteCard will always update any running versions with the most recent file.

Please note that if the host Mac is not connected to the network (and the folder mounted) the sheet files will not be available to any client Macs which are attempting to share the hosted sheet folder. NoteCard will attempt to issue notices and close/open the sheet browse when the remote sheet folder (on the host) has been mounted or unmounted.

Selecting the sheet folder on a network mounted volume.

Sharing sheets with other Macs.

Sheets can be moved/opened liked any other file in the Finder but to be used in NoteCard they must reside in the sheet folder specified in the preferences.

If you wish to share sheets with other Macs simply transfer the sheet files into the sheet folder on the desired Mac or open the file in the Finder and it will be moved into the sheet folder for you.
