Requirements

Windows 95 or 98.
6 MB of hard drive space.
DirectX 6.0 or better.

Recommended specifications:

2 MB 2D video memory.
A Pentium 200 MHz processor.
A joypad/joystick in addition to the keyboard. (This is a two player game, and two players using the keyboard at once may be a problem, as many keyboards does not support holding down more than 3-4 keys at once.)

Game Background

It all started when we in Domenic Team where programming in Amos on the Amiga 500. We started making this split screen war game, but we never got to finish it. So a few years later we started making it in Assembler on the PC instead.

Game Basics

Scudden Death is a two player split screen war game in 2D. Two players fight wars against each other on a battle field in real-time, using different units, like planes, choppers, cars and turrets.

The game has got many levels for you to play on, and you can also make your own, or add levels made by others.

Each war is divided into battles. Destroy your opponents Head Quarter to win a battle, and win two battles to win a war. If both players are unable to destroy their opponent's Head Quarter, press F9, and end the battle with a dogfight.

You earn money each time you kill one of your opponent's units. This money can be used to buy units and ammo in the shop between wars.

Each player selects a team before they go to war. Statistics like wars won, wars lost, money, kills, etc. will be saved with the teams.

Starting a Battle

The screen is split horizontally while in the battle field. Player 1 plays on the top, and starts on the left side of the battle field. Player 2 plays on the bottom, and starts on the right side.

At the start of each battle, both players have to deploy units onto the battle field. A list of units you may deploy will appear. Both players must deploy their Head Quarter to be able to start fighting. You can only deploy ground units at the start of each battle, but planes and choppers can be inserted during a battle. Read the unit section to find out how to deploy planes and choppers.

Chart

The Unit List shows your own units in green, and enemy units (your opponent's units) in red. Enemy units will show up in this list if they are visible on your radar. To be visible on radar, enemy units must be within radar range of one or more of your own units. The unit in a brighter green in the list is the one you have currently selected and are controlling. The unit in a brighter red is the enemy unit you are targeting.

The Friend/Enemy Box can be toggled between green and red with the "Team Toggler" key. When the box is green, you can use the "Prev Unit" and "Next Unit" keys to change which of your own units you wish to control. When the box is red, you can change which enemy unit you whish to target.

The "Missile Locking" key is used to turn missile locking on/off. If missile locking is on, missiles you launch will guide themselves to the enemy unit targeted. Missile locking is off when there is an X over the Friend/Enemy Box.

The Armor Indicator shows how much armor the unit you have selected has got left.

The Unit Rectangle Mode Indicator shows which mode the unit rectangles are in. The unit rectangles are the rectangles around the units on the screen. You can have rectangles around all the units, only enemy units, or your enemy target, or you can turn them off. Use the "Unit Rectangle Mode" key to change the mode.

The Aim Indicator tells if the Unit Aim is on. If on, there will be a white dot somewhere around the unit you are controlling, telling which angle the unit is pointing.

The Units

You can change the angle of most units with the "Left" and "Right" keys, and fire with the "Fire" key. A few units have got additional controls and/or are controlled differently.

Creating Your Own Levels

The game levels are just plain bitmap files (.bmp), so you can make levels with Paint or some other paint program. Put your levels in the "Levels" folder.

The levels must be in 640x480 resolution. The color depth can be from 2 colors to 16 million (24 bit) colors.

The magenta color is the transparent color. It is very important to use this color as the sky, if not, it will be impossible to put units onto the level.

To make a description of your level, just create a text document containing your description and put it in the "Levels" folder. The description file must have the same name as your level. If your level is called "My Level.bmp", name your description "My Level.txt". The level description is limited to 512 characters.

Creating Your Own Teams

Go to the "Teams" folder and create a new and empty text document. Name the file whatever you want your team to be called (e.g. "My Team.txt").
